I think his odds of going to jail even if convicted of the most serious
Accusations are slim - and I don’t think that’s because of fear of illegal, violent reprisals by his following. I think it’s because of the complications of protecting an imprisoned ex president.
I’m not predicting anything. All I know is that fears of violence when Trump has been charged and arraigned, so far, have been overblown. Possible your current fears are also overblown. I think many folks, even those talking a good game about retribution, have paid very close attention to the consequences for the actions of 1/6 rioters.
Fact is we did not take the threat on 1/6/21 seriously enough, and law enforcement was most definitely not deployed to meet the threat. A few capitol police were overwhelmed, and of course our commander in chief at the time seemed in no hurry to reinforce them. I would agree that law enforcement agencies should not make that mistake again. And given their presence at the arraignments in multiple states so far, I don’t believe they are.
But either way, there is absolutely no way any jurisdiction should forego prosecuting crimes they allege out of fear of reprisals from lawless mobs who refuse to accept the verdicts of courts. If anything, it has never been more important, any time in our history, to pursue justice against these serious charges without fear or favor, and to double down on demanding respect for verdicts of courts.
Those who refuse to do that, if any, if Trump is ever convicted, should meet the full force of law enforcement. Because our Constitution sets the courts as the final arbiters of our disputes - that’s a requirement of all citizens, not a suggestion. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 08/21/2023 1:56PM]
